What is Couture? The term couture" has been misused in the modern fashion world by ready-to-wear brands since the late 1980's, and its true meaning has become blurred in the public perception. Johanna Grace dresses are not "ready-to-wear dresses", mass produced in factories with the final finishing touches and labels put on in America where they are sold. They are a luxury brand of dresses of superior workmanship, created with imported fabrics from start to finish in our workroom in New York. Each dress is made by hand by one courtier, using old-fashioned construction techniques. All of our patterns are custom-made to the client's measurements; for hard to fit clients we start with a fitting muslin to ensure accuracy of fit and proportion. Luxury fabrics are cut by hand and the garment is constructed with carefully chosen threads and notions. Our exquisite embellishments and trimmings, such as hand-rolled roses and hand-made silk tassels are applied by hand. All of our sashes, bows and bindings are bias-cut, giving these details grace of movement and elegance. All dresses are hemmed by hand unless the design dictates otherwise. The skirts of our dresses are not lined; rather, they are designed to be worn with the proper undergarments, which allows for ease of care of the garment. |
